Me

Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee,
and just as hard to sleep after.

ANNE LINDBERGH – writer and aviation pioneer

I am fascinated by communications, always have been. It’s been intrinsically part of my life. And it gets me going in the morning, much like black coffee. It’s certainly why I’m here.

Many of you reading this blog may know how difficult it is to try to express yourself in another language, in another culture. I’m still trying, now and every day. Born in Brazil, I came to the United States 12 years ago to study English for four months. I landed in San Diego, California, where the sun was a comforting familiarity to my home country, but I quickly realized two things 1) that what I was really learning about was the power of communication, in any and all forms and 2) that it was going to take more than a few months to master it. So I decided to stay and soak it all in.

Six years later, and with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from San Diego State University, I gave up the west coast for the east and moved to New York City, by no chance, the communication’s capital of the world.

And here I continue to evolve as a communicator. Ultimately, trying to be a better person and professional. I’m working in advertising and currently pursuing my Masters degree in Strategic Communications at Columbia University. In my seven years in the workforce I’ve been honing both my strategic and client services skills in Relationship Marketing (online and offline), across different industries from liquor, non-profit, energy to pharmaceuticals. In this field, unlike any other, communications are the ultimate vehicle of trust, to building long-standing, mutually-fulfilling relationships. So naturally, this subject seems more relevant now than ever.

And who knows what’s going to happen next…

One day I just hope my learning and experiences work together to prepare me to give back to my community, here or in Brazil. Maybe some day I’ll have the pleasure to lead bright-eyed students through a discussion of communications. I can think of no better way to pay it forward than educating the next generation of communicators. That’s certainly a dream close to my heart and worth staying up for.

In the meantime, if anyone is interested, I just happen to know a great little Brazilian coffee place in midtown…

Hope you check back soon.

‘Till next time. Tchau!

Raquel
